How do you prevent trade recipes from leaking when staff resigns is akin to Penang’s proposed foreign cook ban, aimed to preserve the kung-fu of cooking Penang food. Similar questions were raised at a recent event organised by #IAL where few SMEs raised a similar question during the Panel Discussion. So here is a simple view. One's learning journey begins with #conceptualknowledge in "how to do it" through reading, viewing, listening, experiencing or thoughtful mental reflection. Each and everyone of us, is determined by what our mind is disposed to do, or believe in certain situation, is labeled #dispositionalknowledge. A veteran cook, in the case of Penang hawker food builds #tacitknowledge acquired through experience, that is often difficult to communicate and teach. The strategy to preserve these "preparation secrets", depends on the size of the company (hawker, food court chain, food manufacturing plant). A global food manufacturing company may have production capabilities in different companies, with different levels of access to who could see or use these recipes, mostly the CEO. Many organisations have food handlers / production operators, like foot soldiers, even if they tried to steal the recipe, is NOT possible to duplicate the process. Even if the foot soldier were to work for a competitior, mimicking the whole process, is no simple feat.Take Coca Cola's success, lies in distribution, advertisement, marketing, apart from a formula, which may not be a wonder formula, with mighty global assets behind it. Scaling back to small hawker context, a cook having the complete know-how (conceptual knowledge) and experience (tacit knowledge), maybe able to replicate it. Yet, here is where strategy sets in creating extensions, differentiations, and process. These ARE the secrets.I help companies in management consulting, through strategy, operations, or HR consulting. PM me for a chat. Local companies enjoy 90% government funding.#InspiretoAspirellp#Whatisyourstory#PenangHawkerFood#PenangForeignCookBan#ManagementConsultancy

Why Does the Jakarta Government Owned A Beer Company? 🍺 Under President Soekarno's Guided Democracy (1957-1966), the Indonesian government nationalized Dutch-controlled businesses, including Royal Dutch Shell (Shell), Deli Plantations, and breweries producing beers like Anker and The HEINEKEN Company. These industries were brought under state control.Later, the Jakarta government was offered a large stake in a brewery, and beer played a crucial role in the city's development. Governor Ali Sadikin leveraged the city's vibrant nightlife—casinos, nightclubs, and bars—to generate significant tax revenue, with beer at the heart of this strategy.Today, the beer legacy lives on, albeit in a smaller capacity, continuing to shape Jakarta’s history and economy.#indonesia #jakarta #beer #bisnis #history

From end December until a couple of days ago, I was reading this famous book "Small Actions" by Eric Sim. When the book was first published, I thought that it was going to be like the rest, and besides, I'm already a practitioner of networking and relationship building. If I knew that this book was going to be so impactful, I would have read it much earlier. Special thanks goes out to Iqbal Firdaus 怡宝 for encouraging me to read the book. These are the parts that I love the most about Eric's book as a person who is a business owner and investor:🍟 Burger, Fries and Coke. Be a combo specialist; what I find intriguing about this concept is building complementary skills that could help you enhance your primary skills and making you a More Valuable Player or More Improved Player at your organisation.🍟 Know Your Restaurant; there are many reasons to love this concept which makes a lot of sense. First, you support local businesses. Secondly when you host very regularly at your favourite restaurant the staff might be more helpful as you are seen as one of the regulars and might have a more comfortable dining experience and a better dining experience helps with business-related luncheons or dinners. The restaurants I like to bring people to are run by Chef Gero DiMaria from Kucina Italian Restaurant in #Singapore and by Clarence Lau from Japanese Restaurant 8FUKU in #Jakarta. 🍟 High Quality Connections; this is another interesting term and what Eric suggest we do is to not be shy but find out how we can add value to our HQC instead of just being passive and approaching your HQC when you think they can be helpful to you. Nothing is going to happen! 🍟 MVP vs MIP; we always think that we need to be the MVP, but Eric opened my eyes that being an MIP is equally as valuable because if you're improving all the time, you will be better than the once-off MVP.🍟 Sell Benefits, Not Features; we always make this mistake. I always talk features when I share what I do. At the start of this year, I realised people gain more interest when I share case studies of success stories from my clients instead. So yes, "Small Actions" is a great book 📖 and I highly recommend it. Like any book, the next step is to implement what you've learnt to see the full effects.

JUST AN OPINIONTen years ago, I remembered that there were very limited options for drinking coffee milk products, mainly from a price perspective. For upper-middle-income people who like coffee milk, they would buy caffee latte, cappucino, etc. in coffee shops like Starbucks, Coffee Bean, etc. However, there were not enough coffee milk products that were affordable for middle-income people. Thus, they were drinking coffee milk instant. On the other hand, for low-income people, they usually drink coffee milk instant from Warung or Starling (Starbucks Keliling). The starlings are the people who sell instant coffee that is ready to drink for their customers, and the sellers are using bicycles. In 2015, PT Karya Tetangga Tuku launched their coffee milk product in South Jakarta, and their brand name is Kopi Tuku. I did not remember the exact price of Tuku's milk coffee, but I knew the price was cheaper than either cappucino or caffe latte prices. Additionally, there was a newcomer for coffee milk products under the Kopi Kenangan brand. The famous coffee milk product name is Kopi Kenangan Mantan, with a price only IDR 18,000 per cup in 2017.Currently, I have noted that there is a newcomer for coffee milk products where the price starts at IDR8,000 per cup. Therefore, I see that the prices of coffee milk are getting narrower, which means that the competition is getting tighter going forward.
