Small plates restaurant
Charlie Was A Sinner is a trendy vegan cafe and bar located in Midtown Village. The establishment offers a seductive, dimly lit atmosphere perfect for intimate conversations over strong cocktails and creative plant-based small plates. The menu features must-try items like the Charlies sliders with tomato-jalapeno jam and crisped shallots, as well as crowd-pleasers such as the potato croquettes.
Absolutely amazing! The atmosphere is dimly lit with flickering tea lights everywhere. The seating is comfortable and tucked away in the back with the option to dine at the bar. The food is so delicious, sampling multiple dishes is recommended among your table. You should experience a bit of each. The serving size may seem small but I promise you'll be full and very satisfied. The drinks were fantastic, strong enough to mellow you out and packed with flavor. Dessert was amazing! The staff are so personable and kind. I highly recommend dining here! Perfect for date night or group gatherings. I'll definitely be back!

This vegan restaurant in the heart of South Philly has an amazing vibe, cozy dim lighting, and outstanding food. We ordered 5-6 dishes along with drinks, and each one was better than the last—it was nearly impossible to pick a favorite! The servers were incredibly patient with us, even as we stayed for nearly three hours, thoroughly enjoying ourselves. An all-around fantastic experience!

This is a vegan only restaurant. I'm not vegan buy my daughter is and she picked the restaurant for her birthday. The food was amazing. She order for us and I enjoyed every dish. The orders are small so you order a couple of dishes per person and share. The place is small so you need to make a reservation. They have a bar and the atmosphere is nice. Just a little dark for me. The server was knowledgeable and helpful when ordering and I was really surprised how much I liked it.

Had a great experience here. The cocktails are top notch and the vegetarian food has a really unique twist to all the dishesThe mushrooms were grilled in maybe coal? It really brought this delicious smokey flavor to it.The Korean tofu was a little spicy which was perfect with the cocktails and had really yummy pickled veggies on the side.It was really busy there, I would recommend making a reservation to get a seat. The service was good our server would stop and listen to me as a drunkenly described how good the good was.Inside the restaurant the lighting was very dark to give a sense of more personal space because it's rather crammed inside.Overall I will definitely visit again when I'm in the area

Came here for the bar. This place is expensive and the look and feel is very pretentious but Charlie’s pulls it off very well. It’s a quieter & smaller spot but manages to still be busy while not over-packed. Once again drinks were pricey but well worth the money, some of the best cocktails i’ve ever had! And service was very friendly. Those little potato balls were so good also I’ll add pictures to my review. Definitely a spot to visit again.

Server was so kind and indulged our late night tiredness when we asked for a ton of recommendations. All the eats were great, especially enjoyed the oyster mushroom calamari. Can't believe it was all vegan!

The BEST vegan food I have ever had. The crab balls tasted more like crab than some other actual crab cakes I’ve had in the past. The sliders were INSANE. I cannot explain how they get their sauces so creamy but they do. The cocktails are also vegan made with good ingredients- no headache after! Very diverse cocktail menu that anyone would love.

The place was packed. The atmosphere was dark and relaxed but up beat if that makes sense, everyone around was happily chatting away. The service was friendly, a table wasn't to be had without some notice, but the bar was open. The Caramelized Eggplant Bao Buns were tasty, reminiscent of childhood Moo Shu vegetable dishes with a little more pizzazz. The "Our Ricotta" was tasty, although would be better shared - it was served with a very good hearty bread and was worth trying, but was a bit dry to eat in its entirety by yourself. Could have used a bit more of something fresh to balance it, although would have been good shared with a couple of friends as was.I had to try the Molten Chocolate Cake, it was delicious. A small portion, but just about right after everything else. A nice contrast of flavors and refreshing cold sweetness. The place is a bit expensive, with everything being very small plates, but delicious and definitely worth checking out. This would certainly be a fun place to go and share an assortment of dishes with a small group of close friends or your significant other for a special occasion.Parking is in downtown Philadelphia, and sucks, but isn't impossible if you're patient.I look forward to checking out a few more of their dishes next time I am in the area and have the time.

What is spectacular place in a beautiful area downtown in Philadelphia with very alluring ambience in a bustling, yet relaxed setting. The decor with dark overtones candlelit tables, linen napkins, we sat at a table for two which most of the place consists of, even though the place was not very large and you were sitting right next to other couples. It was such an intimate feeling and you could barely notice a couple sitting next to you, just wonderful. Our server was excellent with great drink suggestions and a good knowledge of the food menu.We started off and shared three drinks the first of which was called Dunn and dusted, and it consisted of coffee liqueur, Nizza espresso, homemade crème liqueur, similar to a chocolate martini, next up was, the fetish which consisted of Thyme infused Mezcal, amaro, maraschino liqueur and grapefruit. And then we shared an emerald city, which was fantastic. It consisted of green tea, infused vodka, French, herbal liquor, lychee, lime, and Charlie’s vegan egg white, for our appetizer, we went with Charlie’s rendezvous, which was Maverick Cave aged camembert, white, bean, hummus, wild mushroom, pate with truffle, spiced peanuts, marinated, red, grapes, castleventrano Olives, grilled French baguettes this was absolutely amazing. The mushroom pate with truffle was outstanding as were the other items, put the mushroom pate stood out the most to us as we played the I’m going to save that last bite for you game, she won of course. On to the iterations menu, we decided to get the zucchini crabcake sliders in the Korean style. Tofu both were just wonderful. The Korean style fried tofu stood out. It had a sweet and spicy outer crust, and it was soft texture was so delicious on the inside with pickles which consisted of variety of pickled carrots, fennel, turnips topped with black and white sesame seeds, for the compositions part of the menu we had mamas meatballs, which did not disappoint. It was served with a hardy Arrabiata sauce to mama sized meatballs, their fantastic in-house made ricotta cheese. perfectly grilled garlic kale and grilled sourdough bread. Up until this point, we were vigilant about taking pictures until the grilled cheese arrived we dove right in, not even thinking about it. This was a perfect blend of Camembert cheese, pear, and cherry, perfectly grilled bread it had a fennel salad on the side to complement the richness of the grilled cheese and a cherry black pepper gastrique. sweet and sour sauce. For dessert you cannot leave this place without having the whiskey bread pudding, a perfect balance of espresso ice cream, whiskey, bread, pudding, and bourbon raisin glaze, perfect portion size as most places are overkill. From what I’ve had in the past and then we also had a dip of their daily selection of sorbet. The food is very rich and very savory at the same time with a broad spectrum of flavors just fantastic at every turn. We were going to give up these. We thought we had enough but each dish that came out we just couldn’t resist , the food was absolutely wonderful and Our server was extremely attentive and not once did this person falter and was genuinely a nice person, we never had to ask for anything from replenishing our glasses of water and bringing our food on time in such a busy atmosphere hats off to our server. I will later add his name as last night. I was feeling so good. I forgot about everything on the outside world, this is a must go. And just like that, I looked at the receipt. Our server was Jack F he was awesome.

Great place for vegan food. Small portions but tastes good and quite reasonably priced. Cocktails are excellent and strong. Place seems to be crowded always and hence noisy. Except that it was a great experience!

We walked in without a reservation, and we were seated in a rather unorthodox area right at the entrance. The service was excellent with well trained servers who were clearly passionate about the food and drinks. I got the Beast of Burden, which was unique with a banana flavor and nice smooth finish. For food I started with the brassica salad, which was air fried? with seasoning and had a delightful flavor and crispness. Especially with the falafel it was more filling than I expected. I loved it. The oyster mushroom "calamari" was absolutely amazing. Everything was delightfully flavorful. I'm not vegan, but if all vegan food were this amazing I'd have no reason not to be.

This restaurant was recommended by a few people and as a vegan I was dying to dine in here. We went to dinner on a Saturday evening so its best to make reservations in advance so that you don’t have to wait. Our server was very knowledgeable, he answered all the questions and even recommended us with the best drinks. Cocktails were strong and well made. The food was phenomenal! We ordered 6-7 different dishes, as they are tapas style, small portions but really good quality. It’s a seasonal menu so I would love to come back again in few weeks for their spring menu. The only issue I had was the restaurant gets so loud, the tables are very close to each other and it’s very hard to have a conversation with the person sitting across the table. But I guess that how almost every restaurant lately has been.

Heard good things about this place & definitely did not disappoint! My server, K was amazing helping me decide what to try and how much to order for a solo diner. I splurged on three items and am happily stuffed! Everything was so good!!

CWAS is one of my long-standing favorites in the neighborhood. Over the years I’ve been here for proper vegan dinners & drinks, it literally never disappoints! Interior decor has a vintage “parlour” overall feel, lighting always dim, very cozy & ideal for dates! This last stop was only for drinks after dinner at PietraMala. I don’t drink alcohol but the mocktail menu is on point & the harder stuff always receives fabulous reactions from folks I’m dining with. If you’re looking to dive into the Philly vegan restaurant scene, start here - you won’t be disappointed!

I visited Charlie was a sinner on a trip to Philly a few years back and it was amazing! I’ve thought about it since then but was extremely disappointed with this past visit. The service was a bit slow although the server was friendly. The food quality declined, the calamari was oily and tasteless, the potato croquets were extremely salty to the point of being un-edible. The cocktails are still magnificent and was seemed to be the general manger was extremely kind and efficient. Sad about the food though!

One of the best vegan meals I've ever had! Excellent food all around. We tried several different plates And they were all outstanding! The cocktails were great too! A+++

Ambiance & luxury. Charlie was a sinner capped off an already amazing day with amazing vegan small plates. Ordered the oyster mushrooms, bao buns, spring rolls, meatballs and chocolate cake (pictured). Not a single bad word to say.

It’s so dark in here. The cauliflower crudo appetizer is not good. The oyster mushroom was good, as well as the potato croquettes which were the best thing we had. We got the meatball entree and my vegetarian friend could not stomach it. It definitely tastes vegan here and unfortunately not in the best way

The ambiance of this place is absolutely immaculate. It’s almost fully candle lit and feels intimate even though the room can get really full. I tried the Rings of Saturn drink which was delicious and surprisingly cohesive for a drink that has vodka and Pinot in it. The potato croquettes were exactly right for light snacking, not really a full appetizer to a meal. And you honest to god would never know it was all vegan, they’re very minimal about that fact which plays to their favor.

Great food, kind server and cozy atmosphere. We sampled several small plates and cocktails and everything was delicious. Definitely recommended having a reservation.

Before my dine in experience, I ordered take out where I tried oyster mushroom, Artichoke frites zucchini sliders everything was good. However, nothing compares to dining in getting food fresh and hot so here I am trying oyster mushroom and potato croquettes both 10/10 (definitely coming back for more). I also tried the Pappardelle Genovese (needs a little seasoning) 7/10. My mocktail midnight sun was good as well. My coworker stated his 1st drink was too strong for him but all the others were nice. He had the pan seared cauliflower which he enjoyed. Atmosphere wise I like the low light and the music its just a bit small once people start rolling in. Nonetheless this is a great place overall and I recommend if you looking for a good vegan restaurant.

Get the fries. They said to order 2-3 plates per person. We got 6 items for 3 people and could have gone with one less.Ranking:1. House fries were hands down our favorite2. The Korean BBQ tofu was also fantastic if you like spicy foodsThe avocado toast, meatballs, and Bao buns were all good. But the calamari just tasted fried and not much else.Yes, it’s loud, but just come prepared. Overall a fun and tasty plant based experience.

Could not believe how delicious the food was as a non-vegan! The mama's meatballs had me completely fooled and they were so flavorful. This place has THE BEST espresso martini in the city - the "Done and Dusted". The Charlie's Punch was phenomenal too. David, one of the bartenders, truly has a gift. But the best part was the service and atmosphere. Annalise was so welcoming and friendly and our server Jack was so outstanding and attentive. We will definitely be back!
